The resolution and sharpness of the specifications indicate the quality of the scan. The resolution is reported as two numbers, for example 4000×8000. The unit of measure is a dpi. Dpi means dots per inch. The first number indicates the dpi along the x-axis. The y-axis dpi is measured by the second number. In general, larger numbers indicate improved resolution.

Interpolated resolution indicates the size of the digital output. This is always larger than the hardware resolution. This is especially important in slide scanning because the slide is very small. However, keep in mind that the quality of the scan does not increase.

The light source dictates the sharpness of the transfer. In a slide scanner, a CCD array is used to interpret the light into an electrical charge. Darker areas of a photograph reflect less light, and these result in dark areas of the scan. Each area of the slide reflects a different level of light, and this is how the image is transferred. Bulb type indicates quality, and florescent bulbs result is less sharp transfers.

Choose the scanner based on the speed you require. Higher end models tend to scan faster without a reduction in value. A less expensive scanner will be slower. Evaluate your requirement. Do you tend to have many slides or few? What are your limitations?
